The Prognostic Value of Ki-67 in Bladder Cancer |

Abstract |
Purpose Conventional histopathological features are generally accepted as prognostic factors of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), but their predictive values are limited. Ki-67 is regarded as a potent prognostic indicator due to its association with cell proliferation and differentiation. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the expression of Ki-67 was associated with prognosis in human TCC. Materials and Methods: From May 1995 to July 2007, 88 human TCC tissues (non-muscle invasive 48 cases and invasive 40 cases) were obtained from the patients who underwent transurethral resection or radical cystectomy. Immunohistochemical staining of Ki-67 was performed and Ki-67 labeling index (LI) was calculated. Patients were grouped according to the Ki-67 LI. Results: The Ki-67 LI was significantly associated with high stage (p=0.001) and grade (p=0.001). Ki-67 LI was significantly correlated with decreased time to progression, cancer-specific survival and overall survival time (log rank test, p=0.008, p=0.003, p=0.014, respectively). However, the elevated Ki-67 LI showed no difference in recurrence rate (log-rank test, p=0.821). Conclusions: These results revealed that the elevated Ki-67 LI was significantly correlated with aggressive pathological characteristics and poor prognosis. Therefore, Ki-67 LI could be useful marker for prediction of prognosis in human bladder cancer. (Korean J Urol Oncol 2009;7:82-88) |
