Abstract |
Radical prostatectomy remains the gold standard methods in clinically localized prostate cancer. Lymph node invasion in localized prostate cancer has poor prognosis. The issue concerning pelvic lymphadenectomy in the management of clinically localized prostate cancer is still debated, however. The purpose of this paper is to review the role, extent, effects of pelvic lymphadenectomy in patients with prostate cancer. The literature of pelvic lymph node dissection in prostate cancer was reviewed using a Medline search. If performed, extended pelvic lymphadenectomy has to be done. Possibility of lymph node invasion in low risk patients is very low, pelvic lymphadenectomy can omit. Patients with intermediate or high risk prostate cancer should undergo extended pelvic lymphadenectomy. Accurate N-staging can be determined by extended pelvic lymphadenectomy.
